Day - 1

Foundations of Safety Management

Objective: Understand the purpose, principles, and legal foundations of safety management systems.

  • Introduction to Occupational Safety & Health (OSH)
  • Key Safety Concepts: Hazard vs. Risk, Unsafe Acts/Conditions
  • Global Standards & Frameworks
    • ISO 45001, OSHA, ILO-OSH 2001, API RP 754
  • Legal and Regulatory Requirements
  • Organizational Safety Policy and Responsibilities

Workshop: Analyze real-world safety incidents to identify failures in systems vs. behaviors

Day - 2

Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment & Control (HIRAC)

Objective: Learn how to proactively identify and control safety risks.

  • Hazard Identification Techniques (HAZID, Job Safety Analysis)
  • Risk Assessment Methodologies (5×5 matrix, FMEA)
  • Hierarchy of Controls (Elimination to PPE)
  • Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems
  • Control Verification and Effectiveness Measurement

Workshop: Conduct a HIRAC exercise on a high-risk task (confined space entry, hot work, etc.)

Day - 3

Safety Culture, Leadership & Human Factors

Objective: Build a proactive and accountable safety culture.

  • What is Safety Culture?
  • Role of Leadership in Driving Safety
  • Human Factors in Safety (Behavior, Fatigue, Ergonomics)
  • Safety Observation Programs (STOP, BBS – Behavior-Based Safety)
  • Accountability, Engagement, and Recognition

Group Activity: Safety culture self-assessment + action planning

Day - 4

Incident Investigation, Emergency Preparedness & Communication

Objective: Respond to safety events effectively and learn from them.

  • Types of Incidents: Near Miss, Unsafe Act, Lost-Time Injury (LTI)
  • Root Cause Analysis Tools (5 Whys, Fishbone, TapRooT)
  • Reporting Protocols and Legal Implications
  • Emergency Response Planning (ERPs) & Drills
  • Safety Communication: Toolbox Talks, Bulletins, Safety Moments

Simulation Exercise: Investigate a mock incident and present findings

Day - 5

Continuous Improvement, Audits & Course Wrap-Up

Objective: Implement best practices for maintaining and improving safety systems.

  • Safety Audits & Inspections (Types, Frequency, Checklists)
  • Leading and Lagging Safety Indicators (KPIs)
  • Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA)
  • Management Review & Continuous Improvement Loop (PDCA)
  • Integrating Safety with Business Strategy
